The deck I just raised on — Get Lucky Golf.
This is the Get Lucky Golf deck I just used to close our R4M seed at a R36M pre-money — golf-tech, AI-verified hole-in-one challenges. Slide by slide, with what worked, what was off, and what I'd cut if I were sending it again today.
How I'm reading this
- One idea per slide. Vercel/Linear-style. Looking back, this deck stuffed 3 ideas onto slide 3.
- Substitution market beats TAM. "$20B golf industry" is wallpaper. "500M par-3 rounds × R200 entry × 0.4% capture" is investable.
- Distribution as the moat. Indwe is the most important business artefact in this deck and it's tile #1 of 4 on slide 8. That deal deserves its own slide.
- Velocity over coverage. 20 courses + 15K members is good. Attempts-per-active-member-per-year is what proves the model.
- Founder-market fit, not founder bios. Each founder bio should answer *"why this team for this specific war"* — not list past jobs.

Slide 1 of 15
Cover — Get Lucky Hole-In 1 Challenge
Worked. Strong logo, sunrise-on-fairway photography, one-line tagline.
Off (in hindsight). No raise, no round, no contact, no date. Same forwarding problem. "Future of golf gamification" is a category some investors will read as a stretch — anchor it with a number.
Today's fix. Bottom strip: "Series Seed · Raising R4M at R36M pre-money · Cape Town, May 2025 · johannes@getluckygolfclub.com". The reader who finds this in their forwarded inbox at 11pm has their answer.
Slide 2 of 15
Rewarding hole-in-ones globally
Worked. Single sentence, big air. Clean.
Off (in hindsight). Empty. Beautiful but the slot is wasted. Investors flip past poster slides.
Today's fix. Either kill the slide, or earn the white space with one piece of evidence. Example: "R3.4M in entry revenue across 20 courses since launch." One number under the headline turns a poster into proof.
Slide 3 of 15
The Dream / The Solution / The Tech
Worked. Three-tier structure (problem → solution → tech) is the right narrative spine. 1-in-12,500 odds is a great trojan-horse stat.
Off (in hindsight). Six concepts on one slide. The 5-step user flow (scan/pay/swing/verify/win) deserves its own slide. The tech stack (cameras + AI tracer + WhatsApp API) deserves its own.
Today's fix. Split into two. Slide 3a: *The Dream + The Pain* — every golfer dreams of it, 1-in-12,500 odds, current verification is a cocktail napkin + insurance dispute. Slide 3b: *The Solution + The Tech* — 5-step UX, 3-stack tech.
Slide 4 of 15
Golf is Big Business — and untapped for digital gamification
Worked. Clear market frame. Local→global story.
Off (in hindsight). TAM-soup. "$20B + 60M people" is the *whole* golf industry, not GLG's addressable. Investors auto-discount this slide because everyone does it. "First-mover advantage" — by what evidence? Has anyone tried this and failed? (Hole19, GolfNow Challenge, TopGolf Toptracer at-course?)
Today's fix. Replace TAM with substitution math: "500M par-3 rounds played globally per year. If 5% take a R200 swing, that's R5B in entry revenue. We need 0.4% of that to hit our 2028 plan." Stress-testable. And drop "first-mover" or back it with one sentence on who's tried and why GLG's stack is different.
Slide 5 of 15
How It Works — 4-step user flow
Worked. 4-step icon flow.
Off (in hindsight). Adjacent to slide 3's 5-step flow. Same content, slightly different framing. Reader gets déjà vu.
Today's fix. Pick one. If 5 is the user journey, *show* it — screenshots of the WhatsApp message, the QR scan, the win-video that gets shared. Show, don't list. If 3 is the conceptual flow, cut the redundant flow on slide 5.
Slide 6 of 15
20+ Partner Courses
Worked. Real logos. 15,000 members. Strong proof of supply-side.
Off (in hindsight). Screenshot waiting to happen — no actual member behaviour data. "15K members" — what % activated? What's the conversion from member-to-attempt? That's the metric that proves the model.
Today's fix. Add three metrics under the logos: "15K members → X% activated → Y attempts per active member per year → R{} ARPM." That's the cohort math investors want to see.
Slide 7 of 15
High-Margin, Scalable Business Model
Worked. 78%/10%/12% split is clear. R200 entry is intuitive.
Off (in hindsight). 78% gross margin is incredible — and unbelievable without unit substantiation. What's the *insurance underwriting cost* per round? If our AI raises true verification rate, the insurance premium goes UP — that's how event-frequency-priced insurance works.
Today's fix. One sentence anchors it: "Insurance cost is locked at 12% via 3-year underwriting agreement with Indwe/Santam (R9M)." Removes the ambiguity. Add expected attempts/member/year so investors can sanity-check the volume against the prize-pool math.
Slide 8 of 15
Leading Partnerships Secured — Indwe / Santam
Worked. Indwe deal is real money (R9M / 3 years) and a meaningful trust signal.
Off (in hindsight). The Indwe deal is the single most important business artefact in this deck and it's tile #1 of 4. Should be its own slide.
Today's fix. Slide 8a: Indwe deal + what it unlocks (R9M cash + insurance backstop + Santam distribution + 3-yr exclusive sponsorship). Slide 8b: Course expansion + Marketing firepower + Tech roadmap. Don't bury the cheque.
Slide 9 of 15
Financial Growth Forecast
Worked. 3-year revenue + EBITDA margin per year. R10M → R30M is a clean 3×.
Off (in hindsight). **Year 1 isn't shown.** Where are we *today* — TTM revenue, TTM EBITDA? "Path to profitability by 2026" — what's the burn between now and then? Without 2025 actuals, 2026–2028 are forecasts on top of forecasts.
Today's fix. Add a 2025 actuals (or YTD-annualised) column. "TTM revenue R3M, growing 50% q-o-q" would be the kill-shot. If the number is small, say so — small + growing fast > medium + flat.
Slide 10 of 15
Get Lucky Founders
Worked. Three founders, real bios, named ventures (Duchess, DOPE, AKING band, Suncamino, Plato Coffee). This is the strongest team page across my decks. Honest "fractional" label for Inus.
Off (in hindsight). "Fractional Creative Director" is a flag, not a brag. For a B2C product where brand IS the moat, a non-vested creative co-founder telegraphs vulnerability. And every founder bio is a CV — not a *founder-market fit* statement.
Today's fix. Either lock Inus into a vested co-founder package and update the title, or add a 4th tile: "Hiring full-time Head of Product to own WhatsApp + AI stack — Q3 2025." Turn the gap into a roadmap. And rewrite each bio around the GLG-specific skill: "Built two beverage brands across 15+ countries — applying the same trade-distribution playbook to golf-course rollout." Pattern-match each bio to the company being pitched.
Slide 11 of 15
Get Lucky Sports Innovation — Sport Fishing
Worked. Plausible expansion logic — same WhatsApp + AI stack, adjacent verticals.
Off (in hindsight). First of two slides on a vertical that doesn't exist yet. Build belief in the wedge before painting the empire.
Today's fix. Compress slides 11 + 12 into one called *"Same engine, next vertical."* One row of icons: Golf (proven) → Fishing (Q3 2026) → Padel (2027) → ... One sentence per. Then onwards.
Slide 12 of 15
Sports Innovation continued — opportunity + why it matters
Worked. "200M recreational anglers worldwide" is a real number.
Off (in hindsight). See slide 11. We're using two slides to say "we can extend." One is enough.
Today's fix. Cut and merge into 11.
Slide 13 of 15
Invest in Get Lucky — deal terms
Worked. Deal terms, valuation triangulation (DCF R57–78M vs ask R36M), 2.4× return / ~30% IRR / R500M exit by 2032.
Off (in hindsight). "Independent DCF values Get Lucky at R57–78M today" — by whom? Unnamed source = credibility-destroyer. The IRR math is fine (2.4× in 3 yrs ≈ 33% IRR) but the *exit path* (R500M by 2032) is on the same slide, computed from a totally different base. Compress and source.
Today's fix. Name the DCF analyst (or remove the line). Tiny timeline visual: "Today (R36M) → 2028 milestone (R96.8M) → 2032 exit (R500M)." Specify the exit assumption: trade sale to whom (Topgolf? Indwe? Santam? An OEM?) at what revenue multiple? Investors test these.
Slide 14 of 15
Why Get Lucky Wins
Worked. Six-tile recap, clean.
Off (in hindsight). "Proven Engagement Model", "Scalable Business Model" — generic. Where's the *specific* thing only GLG has?
Today's fix. Each tile = one specific defensible asset. *Proven Engagement* → "57K attempts at 20 courses in 2024." *WhatsApp-native* → "0% app-install friction; SA WhatsApp penetration 95%." *Trusted Brand* → "Indwe 3-yr deal locked." *Cross-sport* → "Same API stack ready to ship to fishing Q3 '26." Replace verbs with nouns.
Slide 15 of 15
Contact
Worked. Clean. Logo + email + phone.
Off (in hindsight). No CTA, no deadline, no "what happens next."
Today's fix. "Closing R4M by [date]. Lead investor slot still open at R1M+ with board observer rights. Book a call: [Calendly link]. Data room on signed NDA." Forcing function.
Patterns I keep seeing
- Two slides doing one slide's job. Slides 3 + 5 (flow), 11 + 12 (expansion). Compress.
- The Indwe deal is undersold. R9M of locked sponsor cash + insurance backstop = the single most defensible thing in this deck. Currently a quarter of slide 8.
- No present-tense traction. 2026–2028 forecasts without 2025 actuals = forecasts on forecasts.
- Founder bios are CVs, not FMF statements. Same disease as Duchess. Rewrite around the *GLG-specific* skill, not LinkedIn copy.
- The "Why we win" recap is the weakest slide of every deck. It should be the strongest — it's the slide that closes them. Replace platitudes with the specific numbers we already proved earlier.
If I had to cut this deck to 10 slides
- Cover (raise + contact + date)
- Why now (par-3 substitution math + AI verification timing)
- Problem + Pain (1-in-12,500, the cocktail-napkin verification problem)
- Solution + Tech (UX flow + AI/WhatsApp/cameras)
- Traction (15K members + activation + ARPM + R3.4M revenue)
- Indwe + partnerships (whole slide)
- Financials (with 2025 actuals column + assumption strip)
- Team (rewritten as founder-market fit; flag the Head-of-Product hire)
- Same engine, next vertical (fishing + roadmap, one slide)
- Ask (R4M for 10%, milestone-gated, exit assumption named) + Contact + CTA
